Created by Carl de Parcevaux, the Hermès scarf “Christophe Colomb découvre l'Amérique” (Christopher Columbus Discovers America) was issued in 1992 to mark the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival on the island of Guanahani on 12 October 1492. The design was reissued in 1998 and 2009.

The scarf shown here is, moreover, the Special Edition for the 1992 Seville Universal Exposition, a very rare and sought-after piece, issued in very few copies.

It is in silk jacquard, with a discreet motif of the flagship caravel, the Santa Maria, adding exceptional depth and texture to this creation.

Its palette combines white, green and red, with a navy blue border.

Art and History of this Hermès Scarf

1492, a key date in world history, stands for the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. Carl de Parcevaux pays tribute to this adventure with a rich historical iconography, inspired by engravings and accounts of the period. At the centre is the flagship, the Santa Maria, surrounded by birds symbolising each continent. Above it is the frontispiece of Stradanus's Americae Retectio (1598), with the portraits of Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. On either side are the arms of Castile, emblems of Isabella the Catholic and Ferdinand of Aragon, the Spanish monarchs who financed the expedition.
