Art and History of this Hermès Scarf
The Timpanier pays homage to an iconic figure of the French cavalry. Until the end of the Second Empire, the timpanier—a mounted percussionist—accompanied regiments in full dress uniform. Positioned in the center of the square, this elegant rider beats the rhythm with panache, in a posture that is both martial and theatrical. His ceremonial uniform is adorned with sumptuous trimmings: braids, fringes, tassels, and cords vie with each other in refinement. On the timpani, the coat of arms with its two intertwined “L”s evokes the era of kings. As for his mount, it is adorned with a richly decorated saddle and bridle, worthy of an imperial parade. This scarf is also a subtle nod to the history of Hermès: by looking up on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, visitors will see the statue of the timpanier enthroned on the roof of the house.
